HISTORY OF THE MODERNA ORGANIZACIJA PUBLISHING HOUSE
In 1968, the first beginnings of publishing activity appeared, in the form of journalistic activity - the publication of a magazine called Moderna Organizacja (Modern Organization). It was published within the framework of the Higher School of Work Organization, as a continuation of the journal Kadrovska politika (Personnel Policy).
The Moderna Organizacja publishing house (Modern Organisation) was founded in 1971 as an independent publishing unit, Moderna Organizacja (Modern Organization), within the Higher School of Labour Organisation. In that year, the first book publications in the fields taught at the Higher School of Work Organization were published, and the periodical Moderna Organizacja, published in Slovenian and Serbo-Croatian with a circulation of 5,700 copies and ten issues per year, was launched under the auspices of the publishing house. Later in 1972, it was renamed Organizacija in kadri.
In 1973, the publishing unit Moderna Organizacja (Modern Organisation) began to operate within the Higher School of Work Organisation as an internal unit with its own publishing council, and later in 1975 it was transferred, together with the Research Centre and the Centre for Functional Education and Counselling, under the auspices of the then Higher School of Work Organization, which was formed from the Higher School in 1974.
The Moderna Organizacija Publishing House has been responsible for the Institute's journalistic and publishing activities throughout the years. On the occasion of the twentieth anniversary of the Institute, in 1979, the main objectives of the journal Organisation and Personnel were defined as the promotion of research in the field of work organisation, the systematic treatment of the most widespread methods and techniques of work organisation, and brief information on the major achievements of organisational theory and practice in this country and in the world.
At the time when the Institute was organised as a college and university, the Moderna Organizacja Publishing House had its own premises, a reproduction house and a flat-press printing house with a common headquarters at 7 Tomšičeva Street in Kranj. Following the development of the printing profession and the introduction of information technology into people's everyday lives, the publishing house and the faculty later closed its printing house in 1994.
Since 1998, Moderna Organizacja Publishing House has been operating in the new building of the Faculty of Organisational Sciences at 55a Kidričeva Street, where it is still organised as an internal unit within the Institute of Organisation and Management and the Faculty of Organisational Sciences.
In the course of its development, the demands for an ever higher quality of the study process increased and the publishing activity has followed this closely, since from the very beginning it has been responsible for publishing the journal and all the materials needed for the implementation of its educational activities, first by the Higher School of Work Organisation, then by the Higher School of Work Organisation and today by the Faculty of Organisational Sciences.
The publishing activity of the Moderna Organizacija Publishing House has developed considerably over the past five years, with 45 new textbooks or books and 159 reprint titles published to meet the needs of students.
The publications cover a wide range of subjects, broadly covered by the curricula of the study programmes of the Faculty of Organizational Sciences. The books, scripts, electronic publications and textbooks by national and international authors are aimed at students and graduates as well as the general public.
After 2008, the activities of the Moderna Organizacija Publishing House were transferred to the University Publishing House, which is responsible for publishing books and scripts at the University of Maribor.
The University of Maribor Press, which was established in 2008, has been fully operational since 2016. It carries out its activities on a modern basis and meets the requirements of today's fast-changing scientific communication. Its main mission is to take care of the publishing activities of the University of Maribor or its members and, most importantly, to disseminate the achievements of authors from the University of Maribor and other esteemed authors as widely as possible on the World Wide Web. The University of Maribor Press publishes books and journals, textbooks and other publications in various fields of science, technology, arts, humanities and social sciences. It publishes both print and electronic publications. It is also an open access publisher, providing an environment for the academic community to pursue new avenues of scholarly communication, i.e. open access publishing.
