UM Prize for Teaching Excellence
In order to promote quality in teaching, the University of Maribor has launched a new award for teaching excellence.
The guiding principle and primary mission of UM is the dissemination and enrichment of knowledge. The UM Teaching Excellence Award recognises quality teaching as a successful educational experience, enabling students to acquire skills and relevant knowledge that prepares them to function as an educational institution in the rapidly changing world of known and unknown challenges of the future. Quality teaching is the foundation for sustainable development of the individual, the individual and society as a whole.
Among higher education teachers, lecturers and colleagues, there are those who teach with outstanding quality and make a significant contribution to innovation in the delivery of the teaching process. Their actions shape good practices, which are often transferable.
About the award
The UM Prize for Teaching Excellence was established to recognise and promote excellence in teaching. The award ceremony will be held annually on the occasion of World Teachers' Day. One main prize will be awarded for higher education teachers and one for higher education staff members in two core areas (natural sciences, engineering, health and agriculture; social sciences and humanities). In addition to the prize money, the prizewinner will also receive teaching points for the habilitation criteria.
From nomination to selection
The nomination and selection procedures are managed by the UM Teaching Excellence Awards Committee. The procedures are governed by the Rules of the University of Maribor Prize for Teaching Excellence No. 012/2023/2.
Nominations are collected until the end of the summer examination period of the current academic year.
Nominations may be submitted by a group of at least three students, the Faculty Student Council, the Faculty Senate (on the proposal of the Faculty Academic Affairs Committee) or the head of the study programme.

The aim of the Teaching Excellence Award is to underline the commitment to high teaching quality and to promote excellence in teaching.
