Case study 2016 / December School
From 5 to 8 December 2016, the December School in Case Study Solving was held at the UM FOV, during which the Case Study Solving Competition was organised. This year's problem solved by the students was presented by DHL Logistika d.o.o., the world's leading provider of air and sea logistics services.
The December School brought together 25 students for a two-day training course to learn about the case study method and to gain skills in public speaking, teamwork, leadership, argumentation and organisational change.
The Case Study Competition, which took place at the end of the December School, was attended by 5 student teams, consisting of:
- BENETEAM: Emina Ramčilović, Mark Pralica, David Rupnik and Matej Ribič
- GIRLS RULZ!: Karin Močnik, Sara Zornada,
- LIMONCE: Tjaša Tekavec, Gregor Žužek, Klemen Petelin and Ula Vidmar
- Group4: Tilen Bajt, Romina Zadravec, Rosana Novak, Urša Hafnar, Jan Gantar
- FOV DREAM TEAM: Amir Draganović, Maša Trilar and Jan Vidmar
Director of DHL Logistika d.o.o. Ms. Sabine Eisses, Director of DHL Logistics Ltd., presented a problem related to the use of the DHL brand in Slovenia to the students on Tuesday, 6 December 2016. The company posed a very complex problem, which the students immediately tackled and came up with solutions by Thursday, 8 December 2016.
All teams submitted their presentations on time, i.e. by 9.30 am on Thursday 8 December 2016, and the competition started. The jury for the evaluation of the proposed solutions was composed of representatives of the company and representatives of the faculty. The solutions were evaluated by the following representatives from DHL Logistics. Jožica Markelj and Janez Miklej from the Sales Department and Ms. Mr. Janez Mikelj, Mr. Tamara Gerdej from the Human Resources Department. On the part of the Faculty of Organisational Sciences, the jury was composed of Prof. Goran Vukovič, PhD, and Assoc. Prof. Miha Marič, PhD.
The committee found the solutions proposed by the students to be very creative and useful. The best solution was offered by a team of freshmen, namely the BENETEAM team, consisting of Emina Ramčilović, Mark Pralica, David Rupnik and Matej Ribič.
Second place went to LIMONCE (Tjaša Tekavec, Gregor Žužek, Klemen Petelin and Ula Vidmar) and third place went to FOV DREAM TEAM (Amir Draganović, Maša Trilar, Jan Vidmar).
This year's case study competition will once again be a rich opportunity for students who, through their active work, will not only have listed a few elements on their future CV, but also have gained concrete contact with a company, thus linking all the knowledge they have acquired so far at university with creative ideas. Their initiative, flexibility and willingness to work as a team show that we have students in the faculty environment who are eager to learn new skills and are ready to take on different challenges.

What is a case study?
A case study is an interactive teaching method. The key players are the students, who approach the solution of a case study with their own ideas. The case study examples are based on real or fictional situations in practice that need to be solved independently or in a group. Students are confronted with a given situation and put into the role of managers or leaders who will make decisions and thus find solutions for a given case.
The concept of case study competitions:
Teams entering the case study competition must consist of 4-5 students. The competitions will be held in English. All students from both Slovenian and international faculties are invited to participate.
The two best teams from the December competition in Kranj will qualify for the final competition, which will take place in March 2016 as part of the 35th International Conference on the Development of Organizational Science.
The organizations from which the competing teams come are responsible for their own accommodation costs. This usually involves accommodation in student halls or hostels. There is no entry fee for the competition. (The price in a Kranj student hostel for a bed and breakfast is around 20 €).
Competition timetable:
December 2015:
The case study competition will take place from 16 December 2015 to 18 December 2015 at the Faculty of Organizational Sciences in Kranj and at the headquarters of the competition sponsor.
The agenda of the 1st competition and training will be published one week before the competition.
Competition sponsor: Municipality of Kranj
March 2016:
The 2nd Case Study Competition, the final, where only the best teams will qualify, will take place in March 2016, more precisely from 15 to 17 March 2016 in Kranj and Portorož. Details will be announced soon.
